Senate Estimates questioning on Monday revealed the shamefaced confession that Labor is going to phase out the Principal Plant Scientist position from Biosecurity Australia.
Good science and surveillance are the only things we have standing between us and an invasion of the new plant and animal diseases.

The only truly rural electorate to change hands from Labor to Liberal in Victoria on Saturday and with a massive swing too was Seymour. This swing was a resounding NO vote for the North-South Pipeline, that ultimate Bracks/Brumby folly which pilfered water from food producers and family farms, pushing it up and over the Great Dividing Range to a capital city that did not care to recycle or harvest... At a press conference at Parliament House in Canberra the Prime Minister was asked a very serious question by a journalist. Latika Bourke, from Radio 2UE, asked Mr Rudd why his leadership was “in crisis”. Mr Rudd did not answer the question but commented instead on what Ms Bourke was wearing.

Newspapers have to be held accountable. In the Weekly Times 31 March 2010 page 7 the Journalist Peter Hunt writes that the Commonwealth and State Governments have committed to $65 million to buyout 108 Campaspe District water entitlement holders.
He states “irrigators gain $2400 a megalitre from the Commonwealth”. Sadly that is simply not true, but we certainly wish it was so.
